Frequently Asked Questions
May I take communion if I’m not an Episcopalian?
Yes. We welcome all baptized persons to participate by partaking of bread (GF available) and wine (or grape juice), representing Christ’s body and blood, during Communion (Holy Eucharist). More information...
How do I know what to do during a service?
We use The Book of Common Prayer as the guide for our services. We have reprinted the complete service of the day in the booklet given to you by the usher, to make it easy for everyone to follow. Everything you need to know to fully participate in the service, including music, guidance on when to stand, sit, or kneel, is in the booklet. Generally, we stand to sing, for the Gospel reading, and when we say the Nicene Creed. We sit to listen to the lessons and sermon. There are other times in the service where people may choose to stand or kneel. Always, if you are unable to stand or kneel, feel free to sit.
What makes Episcopalians different from other Christians?
The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican community and traces its heritage to the beginnings of Christianity. Our liturgy retains ancient structure and traditions and is celebrated in many languages. Both men and women, including those who are married, are eligible for ordination as deacons, priests and bishops.
Our faith is based on scripture, reason, and tradition. We exist to proclaim the good news of Christ! More information...
How can I explore Christianity and the Episcopal Church further?
Two good resources for exploration are the Bible and the Episcopal Church’s The Book of Common Prayer; both of these are available for review in our pews and in our library. Additional literature is available in the brochure racks in our gathering area. If you are considering joining St. Luke’s, please sign up to receive our weekly E-newsletter that lists items of interest. Our clergy are also available by appointment to discuss your faith journey with you at your convenience.
What is St. Luke’s position on diversity? Is everyone really welcome?
Yes, we really mean it! We are proud of the inclusive nature of St. Luke’s community, as well as that of the greater Episcopal Church.
How can I join St. Luke's?
It’s easy! Talk to our clergy or ushers when you leave the service. We offer baptism and confirmation classes annually, and periodically, a series of newcomer sessions as well. Our clergy may work with you through these programs or individually.
If you are transferring your membership from another Episcopal church, contact our Church Administrator for assistance in that process. Members of our church are asked to participate in stewardship by making an annual pledge of financial support for our programs and services, and volunteering as they have time.
What does St. Luke’s offer to families with children?
For all of our children's programs, there are always two caregivers on duty, and the volunteers staff who provide that service have taken the Safe Church program as required by the Diocese, and have passed criminal and child-abuse background checks.
There is a safe, colorful Nursery available at all times.
For older children, Christian Education begins at 10:15 AM. There they experience and interact with the stories of God and God’s people, and learn the language of our Christian faith. At the door to the Church Sanctuary, you will find a variety of pages to color and bags of crayons. There are also cloth bags of activities for you to enjoy while you visit. In the Parish Hall, look for the Children's Corner with activities for our youngest friends. We LOVE that you are here!
The best way to stay informed about special projects and special events is to give us your contact information on the back page of the bulletin when you feel ready. We will happily add you to the church family roster for emails and texts. Our goal is for the children and youth in our care to know that God loves them. We want to encourage them to love God and love people. Love is first. We hope you and your children will feel loved here. Gather with us in this community formed around love and service to others.
What does St. Luke’s offer single or young adults?
There are single members of all ages at St. Luke’s. One of the best ways to get involved is to join one of our Ministries, or to attend one of our Adult Education classes.
How can I make a contribution to St. Luke’s?
